For Stena Aluminium, the past year was characterized by the continued development of solutions that enable circular processes. Globally, growth slowed in the aluminium industry during the year, but the long-term projections for demand remain positive. Aluminium can be recycled an infinite number of times and it is light, strong and doesn’t rust.

DEMAND FOR LIQUID ALUMINIUM CONTINUES TO INCREASE

Although most of the raw material it produces is supplied as ingots, the company also offers aluminium in liquid form. In addition to the financial benefits for its customers, this reduces both energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Demand for liquid aluminium has increased by more than 20 percent over the past two years.

CIRCULAR PROCESSES AND REDUCED CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS

Producing recycled aluminium generates salt slag, which consists of salt and aluminium oxide. Stena Aluminium recycles these two elements. The salt goes back into the process, while the aluminium oxide is sold and used as raw material in other industrial applications. From the fall of 2018, the salt slag is transported by rail, leading to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of around 70 percent.

INVESTMENT IN CONTINUED GROWTH

Stena Aluminium’s aim is to continue to grow with its customers and increase its market share. Therefore, a significant upgrade of the production facility in Älmhult was decided during the year. This project will be carried out over several years, with the first stage initiated in the summer of 2019.
